

I was aiming for a thriller book which is almost defined by its limitations in time and space. In addition to that, I wanted the entire book to be set in one, claustrophobic setting that you never escape from: an RV.

I don’t think that in itself was a huge challenge for me, because I first wrote A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder as a standalone, and each book has its own mystery that concludes by the end of the book, so I’ve had experience in wrapping up a complicated plot in 400 pages before.īut with Five Survive, I decided to set myself an additional challenge: I wanted to write a book that was set in just eight hours, the story unfolding in the same amount of time it takes to read the book. And after writing three very large and complicated, interconnected books about the same character, I think it was natural for me to steer towards a standalone, a very different kind of story that begins and ends in just one book. HJ: I knew that the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series would end as a trilogy, bringing Pip’s story to a close with As Good As Dead. Why did you decide to write Five Survive as a standalone novel and was it a very different challenge to begin and end a story in a single book?
